2020 Houghton Stripe Shiraz

Background Information
Houghton was founded in 1836 by a syndicate of British Army Officers and named after the most senior of the three – Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. Throughout its history, Houghton has build an enviable reputation shaping the Western Australian winemaking landscape.
Vintage
An excellent lead-up to harvest saw moderate yields and good berry size with cooler conditions for most of the growing season. A vintage without extremes of heat and later ripening than recent vintages saw fruit ripen slowly and steadily. An excellent year for Western Australian red wines.
Winemaker’s Notes
The fruit was machine harvested at flavour ripeness and then gently crushed to ferment. Fermentation on skins in static fermenters lasted between 7-9 days. Following fermentation, the wine was gently pressed off skins and then matured on French oak for several months before being blended and bottled. The 2020 Houghton Shiraz is an excellent example of West Australian Shiraz displaying typical characteristics of red berry fruits with violet floral notes, cinnamon and clove spice.
Tasting Notes
The colour is a brilliant dark red with purple hues. Intensely aromatic, the Houghton Shiraz displays cherry and blueberry fruit combined with black forest, cinnamon and white pepper spices. The palate is bright and flavoursome showing cherry, dark chocolate and white pepper spice, light oak chariness with silky fine grained tannins provide good length and structure.
