Our Story

Our purpose

At Brookland Valley, we are passionate about wine. We are dedicated to the land. And we are proud to call Margaret River our home.

Sustainable viticulture and winemaking with minimal inputs allows our unique location and vineyard to speak for themselves in our wines.

OUR HERITAGE

Daphnis

From the very beginning, Daphnis playing the flute has been depicted on our labels and can be found overlooking the Wilyabrup Brook in a picturesque location.

The Sicilian shepherd Daphnis was believed to be the inventor of Pastoral poetry in Greek mythology.

Shepherds herd livestock around open areas of land according to seasons and water and pasture. In pastoral poetry, rural life and landscape are idealized and represent a perfect relationship of man and nature. A pastoral poem is set in a beautiful rural landscape called "locus amoenus", which is Latin for beautiful place.

Inspired by Daphnis, Brookland Valley wines deliver artistry and poetry in every bottle.

MEET OUR WINEMAKER

Courtney Treacher

After earning a Bachelor of Science (Viticulture and Oenology) at Curtin University, Courtney began her career in vineyards in the Perth Hills, Swan Valley, Margaret River at Redgate Wines, and Hunter Valley at Tamburlaine Wines. Courtney joined Houghton Wines in 2004 and has since delivered 20 vintages across Houghton, Swan Valley, and Nannup. In 2020, we proudly appointed Courtney to Senior Winemaker for Houghton Wines.

Courtney enjoys leading a dynamic team and taking on the challenge of making exceptional wines of varied styles under the Houghton, Brookland Valley, Goundrey, Amberley and Moondah Brook ranges. Courtney has judged at many local and national wine shows, and she was a scholar at the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial in 2011. An experience she describes as once in a lifetime.

Courtney has a longstanding passion for winemaking, falling in love with the transformational art behind crafting grapes into wine.

When she is not enjoying a traditional Chardonnay, Riesling or Cabernet, you can find Courtney enjoying photography or travelling to exotic locations. This includes across her home state of Western Australia.

OUR HERITAGE

McGregors Cottage

Daniel McGregor was a pioneer in Western Australia's south west region and was granted permission to cut timber for "domestic purposes" to build the cottage at the entrance to the Brookland Valley property in 1881.

He arrived with his family at the Swan River colony as a 15 year old in 1851. At 22, he was contracted to deliver the mail to Perth – this required him to walk from Swan River to Perth carrying the mail on his back.

From 1849 until 1854 McGregor worked as Deputy Manager of the farm Belvedere and owned the Vasse Hotel license from 1854 until 1859. In 1856, he purchased Cometville (later renamed Comet Vale), a fertile 900-acre property in Quindalup. In 1858 McGregor began farming at Comet Vale where he remained until his death in 1898.

McGregor owned and leased a vast stretch of land accessing the coastal strip west of Caves Road. This stretched from Cowaramup Bay in the south to Cape Clairault (and Yallingup) in the north. The Brookland Valley property, then Sussex, was granted to Daniel McGregor on a peppercorn lease. The Brookland Valley property was part of the Coast Run used for cattle grazing.

After the property was sold by the McGregor family the cottage was used to run horsecoaches. Being situated on Caves Road made it an ideal depot.
